Wallingford Rd, North Stoke, Wallingford, OX10 6BE
King Alfred, Dick Turpin and Agatha Christie are 3 of the names linked with historic Wallingford, the market town 80.5 km/ 50 miles west of London. Alfred built the town to defend himself from Viking raiders and his 9th century street layout remains largely unchanged. Dick Turpin visited the local hostelry and Agatha Christie, who lived on the outskirts, is buried nearby. When the Civil War began, Wallingford became a stronghold of King Charles. It was the last garrison to fall, in 1646. 6 years later Cromwell's men demolished Wallingford Castle and used stone and timber remains to help build Windsor Castle. The railway arrived in 1866 and today's attractions include Cholsey and Wallingford Railway, which runs steam and theme days. Visitors can learn about the town's history at Wallingford Museum. They discover that the mace used in the House of Commons is a copy of Wallingford's, still used in the town's mayor-making ceremony, and that an early government mint existed in the town. The 1856 Corn Exchange is now a theatre and cinema. Wallingford is the burial place of local resident Judge William Blackstone, author of Commentaries on the Laws of England. This was used by the founding fathers of the United States of America when drawing up that country's constitution, Music lovers enjoy concerts at St.Peter's and at St.Mary's churches and each September a 3-day BunkFest Festival of steam, music and dance takes place. Wallingford's 300-metre long Thames bridge is built at the point where William the Conqueror crossed centuries ago. The town boasts good mooring facilities, a Thames-side campsite, open-air swimming pool and large public park. Royal Swan upping is a July attraction and Wallingford Castle Meadows is a popular recreational facility. Visitors enjoy the wide range of independent shops and attractions such as the weekly Charter Market and monthly farmers' market. The town also has a number of successful antiques businesses. You can get further information from the Wallingford Town Information Centre.
